Newshade is more than an on/off switch. Here's every feature explained in detail.

Automatic blurring with click-to-reveal overlay

Articles about war, violence, disasters and crises are blurred out. Clicking the overlay reveals the article anyway – nothing is deleted or censored.

Constructive mode

Detects solution- and progress-oriented articles (e.g. "breakthrough", "successfully rescued") and highlights them with a green badge – in addition to normal filtering, not instead of it.

Adjustable sensitivity

A slider controls whether a single match in the text is enough, or whether multiple matches are required before an article is hidden.

Five languages with automatic detection

The interface and topic detection work in German, English, French, Spanish and Italian. Page language is detected automatically (HTML attribute, meta tags, stopword analysis as fallback), so international sites are covered reliably too.

Community presets

Four ready-made combinations of categories and sensitivity (Minimal, Standard, Strict, Custom terms only) can be applied with one click.

Import your own word lists

Additional terms can be imported as TXT (one term per line) or CSV (term,category). A ready-made, extended list with 129 terms across 11 categories is available for free on our filter list page.

Optional AI analysis

Borderline cases can additionally be checked with Anthropic Claude or any OpenAI-compatible provider (OpenAI, Groq, Mistral, self-hosted). Requires your own API key, stored only locally.

Export & import configuration

The entire configuration (sites, filter terms) can be saved as a file, transferred to another device, or shared with others.

Cloud sync via Chrome

Settings automatically follow you across all devices where you're signed into Chrome with the same account – visible in a dedicated status display including storage quota used.

Daily stats with manual reset

Shows how many articles were hidden today and how many were viewed anyway – in the popup and settings, with a button to reset manually.

Quick-disable with confirmation

A small "✕" button right in the overlay permanently disables a term – after a confirmation prompt, so nothing happens by accident.

Keyboard shortcut & icon badge

Ctrl+Shift+Y quickly toggles the filter on the current site. The extension icon also shows a number badge for how many articles are currently hidden on the page.

Accessibility

The overlay is fully keyboard-operable (Tab, Enter, Space) and carries descriptive ARIA labels for screen readers.

Everything runs locally in your browser. No analytics, no ad IDs, no server of our own collecting your data.
